Kyūsho & Atemi Jutsu

Oyata's Principles & Approach

Table of Contents

This book is designed to introduce Principles, Theories and even Fallacies rather than just a list of ‘x’ number of techniques and ‘x’ number of specific points on the body. I’ll discuss a little bit of Taika Seiyu Oyata’s history. I want to state in advance that the reason he was so good and continued to get better was specifically the methodology that was instilled into him by his two most significant instructors. Wakinaguri and Uhugushiku. These two instructors taught Principle Based Instruction. They did not teach him 1000 techniques. They had very limited time left on earth as both were in their 90’s when Taika met them. Instead, they taught a series of principles and left him with several scrolls related to principles. In this manner, you can continue to follow those sets of principles for decades after your instructor has gone. You can continue to apply those principles and grow your set of knowledge. If you merely are spoon-fed a bunch of techniques, but don’t understand them, you have set unsurmountable boundaries.

This book does not contain an exclusive list of meridians, points and things typically associated with the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to Kyūsho Jutsu training. Those are easily accessible elsewhere and were never used by Taika Seiyu Oyata. There is no demand to abandon everything you have previously learned, just know the other predominately held beliefs related to Kyūsho were not the beliefs of Taika.

As almost every single principle and theory in this book is symbiotic with a host of other principles and theories, it was rather difficult to put everything in a very easy to follow sequence. Quite frequently I was forced to introduce one principle, when other principles it is intricately entwined with were not yet introduced. All these principles, concepts and theories are wrapped together in such ways that makes it extremely difficult to simplify into a one-read book form. It would probably take most people a couple of reads to start to properly digest, I know it took me decades to digest and I’m still chewing on the fat. In fact, this book has taken forever to get printed because every single time I read it I remember five or six more principles and must rearrange things. At some point, I just have to say enough is enough and leave mental room for future addendums. The initial Six Basic Principles of Tuite book only covered six, obviously, and there are a lot more tuite principles. A companion book of additional tuite principles is also forthcoming but realize many of the ones in here also apply.
